Sunday 12th January 2014 – Les Crete Quarry, St Martin – 10.30-13.00

Woodland management

From Jersey Conservation Volunteers

The Details

Meet at Les Crete Quarry, St Martin (Jersey phone directory map 10, H1. Head north along the coast road from Anne Port and park in the quarry on the left before you get as far as Archirondel, it’s the quarry with ‘Jersey Ormer’ in it opposite the picnic area). From there it is a 10 minute walk up a very steep hill to the work site, so please arrive a little earlier, so we can set off at 10.30 promptly. Please let us know if you need further directions

The Site

Gerard Le Claire Woods, Mont de la Crete, St Martin.

The Task

In January 1996 Gerard Le Claire became Director of the States of Jersey’s Environmental Services Unit. However, he also served for six weeks a year on environmental and humanitarian disasters across the globe for United Nations Disaster Assessment and Co-ordination (UNDAC). It was on such a mission in Mongolia in January 2001 that he tragically lost his life. This young native woodland was planted in his memory.

The trees are doing really well but could now benefit from some woodland management. On Sunday we will be removing tree shelters, doing some tree pruning and bashing any unruly encroaching bracken and brambles too.

Tools Needed

As always, we can supply some tools (we are very limited on secateurs), but please bring your own if you have them. Cutting tools such as secateurs and pruning saws will be particularly useful.

Clothing Needed

Good thick gloves (though we can supply a pair if you don’t have them), wellies or sturdy boots, (it shouldn’t be muddy but the vegetation may well be wet it and it may be rough underfoot) and common sense clothes to cope with the elements.

Children are welcome to attend this task as long as they are directly supervised by a parent or guardian.

Kim will be on hand with her wonderful homemade cakes and refreshments to reward all your hard work.

Really hope to see you there.
